Both Deceased Students Identified in Brown University Attack as Law Enforcement Continue Manhunt for Gunman.

The pair of scholars who were killed in Saturday’s mass shooting on the university campus were honored at the start of the week – as a manhunt for their shooter carried on following the release by local law enforcement of the single suspect of interest in the case.

Remembering Ella Cook

The student Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was described as “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, per the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which honored her memory at a service on Sunday.

Cook was second-in-command of Brown’s branch of the campus GOP group, according to the organization. The White House press secretary also posted condolences on social media, stating: “Words cannot express. Thinking of her loved ones and companions, especially her parents.”

An International Student

The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his freshman year at the Ivy League university, family members said.

The victim's identification was confirmed by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.

“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. He harbored grand aspirations of becoming a neurosurgeon and helping people,” his sibling Samira said in a online post.

The Shooting Incident

Nine more persons were hurt in the violent event in the engineering building of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the school’s final exam period.

Officials stated late Sunday that a 24-year-old male taken into custody in a police operation at a lodging about approximately 17 miles from the campus earlier in the day was released from custody.

“A perpetrator remains free,” said the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

He continued, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you must reassess and pursue a different angle, and this is precisely what occurred over the last day or so.”

Public Fear

Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, noted: “It is expected to provoke new worry for our city”.

The assailant began shooting inside a lecture hall in the engineering facility on Saturday, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm handgun, a law enforcement official told the news agency.

Police that entered the inn recovered two firearms and two ammunition clips when the person of interest was arrested, according to reports.

The Wounded Victims

Among those wounded, one student was allowed to go home, said the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in critical but stable condition, and one was in critical condition, officials reported on Sunday.

An educational institution, a private K-12 school in the city of Durham, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.

More Condolences

Cook was remembered at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only during her upbringing... but at Brown she was a radiant presence in that institution as well.”

A group leader, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the club. “Ella was known for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she worked for her branch and fellow classmates,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the student's death in a tribute. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to the Umurzokov family, friends, and peers and grieve for of his bright future.”

Broader Statistics

The weekend's murders at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US college with about over seven thousand undergraduate and postgraduate students, took place amid one of at least nearly 400 mass shootings reported in the US so far in 2025, according to statistics. The following Monday was the 349th day of the year.
