Eurovision Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – But It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Gloss Over Warfare.

An recent acronym surfaced a few months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Child casualty without any family left”. This designation is found only in Gaza, according to doctors like child health specialists. Typically, it is unusual for physicians to attend to a young patient who has seen the death of their entire family. But, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been obliterated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other region in the world. No sense of normalcy in many doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.

A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Reported Truce

Gaza remains a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are not getting in those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that atrocities are still being committed. The Israeli government disputes these allegations, just as it refutes each claim it is charged with. Meanwhile, while young survivors are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its declared purpose of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, although at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. And this, we are told, is what unity resembles.

The contest, notably excluded Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems completely different.

A Selective Vision

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what appears to have been an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that settler violence and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that global media are still prevented from independent reporting in Gaza. None of this, apparently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Amidst Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision turns 70 next year – roughly two times the projected longevity of a person in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it once represented. An institution that initially championed harmony has devolved into a cynical way to whitewash war.
