‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s path from gurney to success with Athletic

Thehe first time the Athletic striker played in England, an 18-year-old representing the reserve team against Bundesliga youth at the English ground in fall 2015, he found the net. On his next visit he appeared in the country, against the English side weeks after, he scored. Another occasion, against Manchester City not long later, sure enough, he did it once more. As he revisited to the northwest to take on Manchester United at the sports complex in that year, he found the back of the net. An excellent finish, also. “Truly,” he remarks, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve netted.” Therefore the team did what they had to do: he was replaced.

“I was furious,” the Athletic striker reveals, before breaking into laughter. “Probably there’s a recording. Our match against United and I was in fine form. They didn’t let me play the latter period: my contract wasn’t finalized agreement, goals were flowing, there were lots of rumours, you know how it is. I’m unsure regarding the Magpies’ pursuit, but I came across reports about the Red Devils, the typical thing. I’m not certain the validity, but had they contacted me, my desire was to remain at Athletic. I’m fortunate to be here.”

Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash

At the training ground, the Basque Country, the day’s first practice is set to begin; after it, the short journey to Loiu airport and another flight to Britain, now to play Newcastle in the UCL on midweek. Mentioning that phrase brings a smile to his face. It’s turning out to be a challenging campaign for the team, partially owing to the pressures of competing at this level. Losing in stoppage time in the local rivalry, they have secured just a single victory of their past eight league games and fallen to the Gunners and Borussia Dortmund in the continental stage. However, look at the overall situation, the big nights he has lived and upcoming events, and he feels a calm gratitude from him.

In the the period since he had rejoined the team, Guruzeta has been a semi-final participant, stopped at the gates a final at home by Manchester United, and has ridden an historic vessel through the waterway flanked by countless supporters after winning the Copa del Rey, the club’s first trophy in four decades. Currently he stands as the club’s leading marksman in the UCL, where they are distinctive and returning after absence in a long period. “I never imagined this,” he admits.

Guruzeta thought it challenging enough just to earn a spot and that proved true. As the child of the former Real Sociedad player Xabi Guruzeta and a dedicated fan at the opposition side, the forward is a product of Antiguoko, the local academy that developed the Arsenal manager, Xabi Alonso and Andoni Iraola. His move to Athletic came at his teens but after his first-team bow in the 2018 season, he suffered a torn cruciate, the cut, a drop in category and a call back before he could earn his place, making his comeback to enjoy the highlights of his career.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta aims to take on Newcastle in the European competition.

“Joining the setup doubting you’ll make the top level but with every stage you advance through you’re remaining and you can notice the proximity. You get there but … departure is necessary.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in half a dozen appearances between his bow and February 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances there and my knee gave way.

“A massive setback but I look back on it as a beneficial experience because it forced me to alter the way I saw things. Healing from a serious ailment is hard, but it aids growth. You develop habits you didn’t have. Previously I was casual, but I attended practice and then go home, like when you’re a kid. At the complex, you have everything, so do everything. Practice, prevention. Get in the gym. Should your hips be uneven, address that. With decent ankle function, enhance it further. Every small aspect: do them.

“Among professionals you’re going to collide with opponents who have been in battles repeatedly. They’re so strong. Seeing previous pictures: my physique was slight. So what happens, happens. Current photos and the change is dramatic. Injury made me see that. Training finishes, but further effort is needed. Peers are prepared, really ready; the same applies.”

Game time is essential. The striker moved upset in that year, in his early twenties, joining the second tier. At Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he netted three goals in numerous matches. At Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the scoring picked up. “It’s a common path: transfers, releases. If you turn it round, effort, faith, and if one day they need someone in your position, they might come back for you. You have to be ready. When the opportunity came, an aspiration fulfilled. Lifting the cup, play in Europe, and make the UCL … pfff.”

No wonder he says this is to be enjoyed. Especially after last year which, on occasions, was involved suffering. From top scorer with sixteen goals, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
