A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users buying such treatments must be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural support.
