Manchester United Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Signing for United

Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL team.

Her exit from Munich has been anticipated since she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to reports, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.

Reliable Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant boost to United’s forward line. She has been highly consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Carrington

Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be gathering positive momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought further activity:

  1. The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
