The Swedish campaigner Reports Severe Circumstances in Israeli Confinement

Youth advocate the Swedish activist has informed her country's diplomats that she is facing harsh conditions while detained by Israel's forces, according to communications reviewed.

These reports also state that a second individual reported personnel captured images of Thunberg while she was said to be compelled to display flags, the meaning of which remains unidentified.

Holding Situation Reported

Via correspondence written by the Swedish foreign ministry to associates of the activist, an diplomat who visited her in custody reported she described being held in a cell overrun by pests, with too little food and water.

“The embassy have met with the activist,” states the communication. “She informed us of lack of water. She has had access to too little of both hydration and nutrition. She also stated that she had suffered from rashes which she thinks were due to pests. She spoke of difficult conditions and said she had been forced to sit for long periods on firm ground.”

“A fellow captive according to accounts informed foreign officials that they had observed her [the activist] being made to hold symbols while images were taken. She wondered whether images of her had been distributed,” the representative stated.

Context of the Humanitarian Effort

The activist is one of 437 activists including elected officials, legal experts, and advocates who are members of the aid mission, a coalition of over four dozen vessels carrying relief supplies with the aim of challenging the country's longstanding sea restrictions of the region.

Recently, authorities intercepted all the boats and detained all participants. The majority of them are being detained at Ketziot, also called a high-security location, a secure facility in the southern region mainly utilized to confine Palestinian security prisoners, many of whom Israel accuses of participating in security-related offenses.

Procedural Concerns and Earlier Cases

In the past, activists detained by Israeli authorities were not criminally prosecuted and instead their participation was handled as an border violation.

According to attorneys from the rights organization, the entitlements of the activists have been “repeatedly infringed”, stating that detainees were denied hydration, hygiene facilities, treatment, and quick entry to their attorneys, “in clear breach of their core protections to due process, fair hearing and counsel”.

Legal representatives supporting the flotilla confirmed those arrested were left “for extended periods without nourishment or drink – until recently”, with the omission of “a snack handed to Greta and shown to the media.” Lawyers also mentioned cases of verbal and physical abuse.

Government Comments and Responses

On a trip to the location on the evening, the country's nationalist political figure, the politician, was filmed calling the individuals “extremists” as he appeared in front of them.

“These are the terrorists of the group,” he declared, using the local language and gesturing toward many individuals seated. A representative stated the video was filmed at the location on that day.

A number of participants were reportedly chanting: “Liberate the region.”

Ben-Gvir has in the past advocated for the detainees to be imprisoned rather than sent away.

Previous Incidents and Handling

After their arrest, the flotilla’s legal team voiced worry over the conditions the participants might encounter, particularly those who had previously been held by Israeli authorities after attempts to challenge the maritime closure. This represents the another occasion the activist has been taken into custody together with other participants, after a parallel mission previously concluded with the taking into custody and removal.

Baptiste André, who was participating in the mission of the coalition in the summer, informed the media upon his return to France that he witnessed authorities taunt and purposefully withhold individuals of repose, especially Thunberg.

Administrative Process and Forms

The Swedish official noted in the message that Thunberg was requested by the government to endorse a paper.

“She was unsure about what the paper represented and did not want to sign anything she did not comprehend,” reads the email. The representative noted that the activist has had access to a lawyer.

The rights group had stated about the legal process that although Israeli authorities would have a file of repeat participants in relief efforts, activists, such as Thunberg, were usually treated in the similar fashion as first-time participants, facing short-term detention and removal.

Questions sent to the Israeli Prison Service, the armed forces, and the diplomatic corps, but none has so far replied.
